Glutathione

What is it?

Glutathione is a dietary supplement used as an antioxidant to help protect the body from many diseases and conditions. It is also used to treat infertility (difficulty getting pregnant), cancer, cataracts, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Glutathione is used to detoxify various chemicals from the body.

Other names for Glutathione include: Gamma-glutamylcysteinylglycine and GSH.

Dosage: There are many doses for this medicine. The most common doses for Glutathione are listed below. Ask your doctor if your health problem is not on the list or if the dose is not given for a product you want to use.

  • Chemoprotection Against Cisplatin Toxicity In Gastric Cancer, intramuscular solution: Administer Glutathione 1500 milligrams/square meter (mg/m(2)) intravenously prior to cisplatin and follow with 600 mg/m(2) intramuscularly on days 2 to 5, by injection (2).
  • Chemoprotection Against Cisplatin Toxicity In Gastric Cancer, intravenous solution: 1.5 grams/square meter (g/m(2)). Administer as a 15 minute infusion in normal saline immediately before cisplatin infusion, by injection (3).
  • Ovarian Cancer, intravenous solution: 2500 to 5000 mg or 1500 mg/m(2)) immediately before cisplatin doses in cisplatin-alone or cisplatin-based regimens, by injection (4).
  • HIV Infection, nebulizer: 600 milligrams (mg) twice daily, by inhalation (5).
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis, nebulizer: 600 mg twice daily, by inhalation (6).
  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (chronic), nebulizer: 600 mg twice daily, by inhalation (7).
  • Please see your healthcare provider for administration of these dosage forms as they are not available over-the-counter

Warnings:

  • Before taking Glutathione tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Side Effects: Stop taking your medicine right away and talk to your doctor if you have any of the following side effects. Your medicine may be causing these symptoms which may mean you are allergic to it.

  • Breathing problems or tightness in your throat or chest
  • Chest pain
  • Skin hives, rash, or itchy or swollen skin

Other Possible Side Effects: You may have the following side effects, but this medicine may also cause other side effects. Tell your doctor if you have side effects that you think are caused by this medicine.

  • Zinc deficiency was seen in long term use of a combination product containing Glutathione (1)
